If you're an educator looking for a unique hands-on view of frontier life in the early 19th century, or a private group or individual looking for a tour of the Bement-Billings Farmstead, please be sure to visit out our Educational Programs page. About Us The Newark Valley Historical Society preserves and interprets the past of Newark Valley, New York and Northern Tioga County. The Society operates two historic sites: The Bement-Billings Farmstead, located just north of Newark Valley on Route 38, and the Railroad Depot, inside the Village. The Bement-Billings Farmstead is a living history museum which interprets domestic life, agricultural practices, and the natural environment of the early 1800’s. The property includes the original Bement farmhouse, a replica blacksmith shop, a reconstructed threshing barn, additional out-buildings, and 90 acres of the Bement family’s farmland. Go back in time and experience the blacksmith’s hammer ringing on hot iron, cabbage soup simmering over an open fire, the wheel whirring gently under the skillful hand of a master spinner. Join a guild and learn traditional crafts such as spinning and weaving, open hearth cooking, blacksmithing, and black powder shooting. The Bement-Billings Gift Shop is located in the summer kitchen of the farmhouse. We feature a selection of old fashioned toys, candy, cookbooks, miniatures, candles, and decorative items. The gift shop is open on weekends from noon to 4:00 p.m., during July, August and September, and during all Festivals held at the Farmstead. The Railroad Depot highlights the history of transportation and commerce in our region. Educational and community activities include formal school programs, community group tours, and free Depot Friday Night entertainment from June to September. The Depot is available for birthday parties, meetings, small dinners, and cinema nights. The rates are very reasonable and it’s a charming venue. If you are interested in renting the Depot, call the office (642-9516) for details. The business office, located on the second floor of the municipal building in Newark Valley, is staffed by volunteers. |
