The Raising of the Herrick Barn
Made during Spring Festival on June 12-13, 1999, at the Bement-Billings Farmstead in Newark Valley, New York. During these two days the frame of an English threshing barn built in the period of 1825 to 1830 was brought back to life.

Although most timber frame barns that one sees around the countryside came into being through a traditional barn raising, the historic record for these events is very meager. This video tape is currently the best documentation of a traditional barn raising available to the public. It is called the contractor/volunteer version because there is a minimum amount of narration and has a running time of 74 minutes. We highly recommend it for anyone interested in barn history, barn preservation, timber framing, traditional woodworking or agricultural/rural history.

Flemmingville and West Creek Road
A video tape of an oral history night which took place on July 13th at the Newark Valley Depot. The topic was life and times in Flemingville and West Creek Road.

It was an exceptionally interesting evening. Many stories focused on Flemingville back when it had a general store, two blacksmith shops, an active Grange and numerous activities around the Depot. Stories included going to square dances in the dead of winter, using German POW's to harvest potatoes and peddling meat to the EJ workers in Endicott.

Gold Medal Ladder Factory
This video taped event took place at the Newark Valley High School on November 16, 1996. The ladder factory was the major manufacturing facility for Newark Valley making the transition from wagons to manure spreaders and then ladders including a brief fling with airplanes.

The evening was hosted by students doing an Architectural Awareness Project sponsored by the Coalition for Better Schools. The Coalition is a collaborative effort between Lockheed-Martin and the Tioga County school systems to increase interest and knowledge of local architecture and give students a chance to work with professionals in the field of architecture. A display showing the history and evolution of the ladder factory will be set up for viewing as well.

Flood of 1935
This was Newark Valley's greatest natural disaster which inundated the Village with 4' to 5' of water and radically changed the Water St. area. There are numerous photos and clippings included in this tape as well as a film clip of Newark Valley in the aftermath of the flood.

Depot Days 1995/Women's Suffrage March
Newark Valley celebrated the 75th anniversary of women's suffrage by inviting Elizabeth Cady Stanton (a.k.a. Sally Roesch Wagner) who rode the Suffrage Train from Owego, march up Main Street and promoted the cause of women's suffrage at the Depot.

Rededication of the Rollie Noble Flag
Rollie Noble was one of the men responsible for having an American flag made which was probably the first to fly over Europe at the end of World War II. The flag is one of the more interesting and unique artifacts from this conflict and is presently housed at the U. S. Infantry Museum at Fort Benning, Georgia. The museum loaned the flag to the Society for a rededication which took place on May 9, 1995, at St. John's Hall in Newark Valley.
