Railway cars or “Speeders” were used to routinely inspect many miles of track for defects. Larger versions would carry half a dozen workers and pull a few trailers loaded with spikers and tools to handle track maintenance. Older versions were operated by hand.
The North American Railcar Operators Association (www.narcoa.org) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and safe, legal operation of railroad equipment historically used for maintenance of way. NARCOA has over 1,200 members worldwide.
This group has made many visits to Tioga County going back to 2009 and will be paying another visit on Sunday, August 30. They will depart from the Depot in Owego on Sunday morning and plan on arriving at the Ray Shaver Depot in Newark Valley by 9 AM. After about 30 minutes for breakfast and refreshment, they will be traveling to Harford where they will turn back around and have lunch back in Newark Valley around 12:00. The group will then return to Owego at 1 PM.
This excursion is being organized by the Eastern Railcar Association which is affiliated with NARCOA. It is quite a spectacle to see up to 20 railcars from different railroads companies and different eras traveling the original route of the Southern Central Railroad which became the Lehigh Valley then Conrail then Tioga Central and now RJ Corman Railroad Group. Stop at any point along the way to wave them on and see a piece of living history.
